When I was entering twelfth grade, I began to dreaming all of my desires of "what to be". I had a huge list. I wanted to work at Disney World that was being built, to work at a bank as a teller, play the guitar, work for the CIA, become an actress, move to California, move to New York, sing professionally, help others, and on and on. I was first insulted each time I mentioned an idea. I was told that I could not, and I mean NOT, work at Disney. I could not be a bank teller, I had to go to college. To become and actress much would be asked of you that can not be in print here. Yes, my singing was beautiful, but church was the place for that. I wanted to run away from home. I began the local Junior college and was told that I could and would sign up for classes for a secretary, as I was probably able to "fan a typewriter". I signed up and then sat in the student union each day. I was one of those ones that got into many things I should not have. However, I looked at those things as a challenge. I knew I could do anything I set my mind to, and that meant stopping addictive behaviors. After that failure, I went to a Fla. State school and fell in love with a particular field of study. But, I was told I wasn't allowed to major in that. I ended up forfeiting assistance from my parents, and went on my own. I watched every penny I had and this is how I learned not only to budget, but also the difference between "want" and "need". Good lessons to have and that came in handy too when I had three children. Coming out from my parents regulations for my life literally felt like a brick had been lifted from my chest.I went through a lot. Many struggles, hiding pain in various ways, always seeking to be loved, were just some of my ways. I had to work very hard, which was a good thing, to pay for things while saving for tuition and putting myself through school.
My self-esteem has always suffered and in the back of my mind when I begin to undertake something I hear the voices of what a failure I am. But, I went to Real Estate school and passed that test the first time, and soon moved to another state as I got married. I've taken two courses at the local college and made A's in both. One professor was the best I've ever had and his class inspired me to get my Paralegal Certification, and then the economy fell!! So, the female attorneys began doing paralegal work to keep themselves in the loop, and take care of their families. I became certified on the National level for Yoga instruction, and Cardiac Yoga instruction, and Meditation Teacher training. These changed my life and saved my life.
Recently, a comment was made to not get anymore certifications or degrees because I don't use them. I used my B.S. degree for years, and my yoga just ballooned to my teaching 21 classes weekly for years. I love to learn, and we should never quit learning. There are so many interesting things out there to be learned, and at some point they will probably all come in useful. Your life may look like a mess or soup bowl, but there is a plan.
I so wish I had had this book forty years ago. My life would have moved differently. At age 18, had I become a bank teller, I would not have stayed one. At that time banks gave stocks to employees and the dollar was worth much more. I would have a super nice nest egg as of now. I know now that I am very intelligent. And had I worked at Disney, I would not be Cinderella now,as there is no way that I would have settled for mediocrity, and I would have surely outgrown the look. I would have moved into management.
This book gives so many options that are great options. You need to listen to your heart and no one else.

I appreciate the author's reasons and willingness to offer this book for .99. Young adults would be so much better off if they knew about alternatives to college. I cringe at the thought of how much debt these young adults are getting into by going to college. So many of them are going to be financially messed up by student loans and, for many, a worthless college degree.
We homeschool our children because schools are the worst places for children for real learning. Can you tell that I am influenced by John Holt and John Taylor Gatto?
Altucher's ideas are a great starting point for brainstorming what to do after "graduating" from high school. We need more people who have come alive with the passions in their heart. It would be a happier world, indeed.

Good heavens, life is more than how much money you can make!
Same as the last book ”Choose Yourself!” that I’ve read from James, I like this one also, and I would recommend everyone to read it. It’s not long, so it wouldn’t take too much of your time reading it. But, it does deliver good content in it.
From his alternatives I have to mention a few that I really like, and those are

Before I’ve read this book I was looking for alternatives in my life, to gain more knowledge and eventually succeed in life. Create better life for myself and family, and one day have a wife and kids. I’ve been working on improving myself for several years.
Internet has become a great place where we can learn and educate ourselves so much, and we don’t have to get into debt to gain that education and knowledge. This is one the good side of the internet. There are many bad things that is occupying internet space, I’ve managed to find things that would benefit me in future. And so many of others will do the same.

This book is a decent idea-generator for a young person, I suppose. I was expecting to find a few dozen alternative-life-style-type choices (as pertains to education) and the careers you could get into using those choices.
The list presented, instead, is basically a description of all the mundane choices we all already know about, with a few really unrealistic choices tossed in. Things you either have to have another method of income generation to do, or a nature inherently more trusting than mine. It's NOT a primer on how to start a "great" career without the standard 4-years in college.
It is a good place to start if you are just starting out and have absolutely no idea what you want to do with your life, I suppose. From my perspective (a few decades past that point and searching for ways to help my son) it really wasn't what I was looking for.
